Hall of the Grancere

The Hall of the Grancere, located in the center of the complex, is one of the most representative and evocative rooms of the Grancia Museum in Serre di Rapolano. This space preserves significant traces of the architectural and decorative transformations that took place between the 16th and 17th centuries, embodying the central role that the Grancia played as an agricultural, social and cultural hub of the Sienese territory.
01

Representation and function

In the first half of the sixteenth century a major cycle of works led to the reorganization of the complex and the creation of the Salone. From here there was access to the Sala di rappresentanza, a place where important guests of the Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala were received, including rectors and distinguished visitors. In the seventeenth century, the Salone was further enriched and decorated, consolidating its function as the nerve center of the social and administrative life of the Grancia.

In addition to its practical function, the Hall had a symbolic dimension. Its large proportions, monumental fireplace, and elegant decorations made it a space intended for prestigious meetings, underscoring the strategic importance of the Grancia as an economic and management hub.

02

Architecture and decorative elements

The Salone is distinguished by its terracotta floors, wooden beams and pietra serena openings, architectural elements that reflect the sobriety and elegance of the Renaissance style. The windows frame an extraordinary panorama that embraces the Sienese hills and the towers of Siena, suggesting a visual and cultural continuity between the area and the Grancia complex. Among the most significant details is the imposing stone fireplace, added in 1629 during a decorative intervention ordered by Rector Agostino Chigi. Next to the fireplace, a decorative niche and other elegant finishing touches complete the harmony of the room, while a beam bears the date 1531, probably marking the conclusion of an early cycle of work under the rectorate of Francesco di Torre Salvi.
03

Between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance

The hall retains original architectural elements that testify to its use in medieval and Renaissance times. The walls still bear the signs of time, and the wood-beamed ceiling evokes the austere and functional atmosphere that characterized these spaces. One of the most significant elements of the hall remains the ancient stone fireplace, which represented not only a heating point but also a symbol of the hall’s central role within the complex.

04

The Salon today

The Salon has not lost its central role. Renovated and enhanced, it is used for ceremonies and events, cultural and otherwise, such as weddings, book presentations, public meetings, or others. The simple furnishings, combined with the monumentality of the fireplace and windows, convey a sense of historical continuity, making the Salone an ideal bridge between past and present.
