UNESCO, historic centre since 1995Via FrancigenaSanta Maria della Scala hospital
The historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995. Shell-shaped Piazza del Campo hosts the Palio twice a year; on the square stands the Palazzo Pubblico with the Torre del Mangia, about 88 metres high, built between 1338 and 1348. From there Via di Città takes you towards the cathedral. Opposite the cathedral is Santa Maria della Scala, the old hospital for pilgrims on the Via Francigena that owned the Grancia of Serre.
