Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino DOCGUNESCO, Val d'Orcia since 2004
At the top of the town rises the Rocca, the fortress built by the Sienese from 1361. On Piazza del Popolo stands the Palazzo dei Priori, the old town hall, built with its tower between the late 13th and early 14th century. Brunello di Montalcino is made only within the municipality: it has been a DOC since 1966 and a DOCG since 1980, among the first in Italy. Montalcino is one of the five municipalities of the Val d'Orcia park, the landscape that has been UNESCO World Heritage since 2004.
